Legislative Council passes bill banning cow slaughter

Bangalore, Jul 15: Amidst the Opposition's vociferous protest over the illegal mining issue, Karnataka Legislative Council on Thursday, July 15, passed three bills including the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill 2010 by voice vote.

Chairman D H Shankara Murthy resumed proceedings in the Upper House despite the protests.

Murthy directed Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik Bilamagi to move the bill for consideration and later put it to voice vote despite the sloganeering by Congress and JDS members.

Manglore: SDPI conducts training camp for its winning candidates

Manglore: Social Democratic Party of India, Dakshin Kannada district unit, conducted a training camp for Gram Panchayat members, who were backed by the party in recent election, at the district office, Mangalore.

Thirty two members attended the camp.

Israel threats against aid ships

Israel says it will keep attacking aid ships heading for the Gaza Strip as the humanitarian situation in the besieged coastal sliver continues to deteriorate.

"No ship can breach this blockade, be it civil or military ship," Israeli envoy Sari Rubenstein told a hearing of the UN Human Rights Committee on Wednesday, describing the siege as "legitimate."

Art of Living returns land to farmer

Bangalore: Giving in to pressure, Art of Living (AoL) officials on Wednesday, reportedly returned one acre of land to Krishnappa, a farmer, who is said to be its real owner, after a demonstration was staged by journalist, Agni Sridhar. A Foundation spokesman however denied claims that land had been returned.

Nagpur:The Bombay High Court has delivered its verdict in the Khairlanji killings. Eight people have been given the life sentence for murdering a Dalit woman and her three children in a village in Maharashtra.

The massacre in 2006 was believed to be the result of a land dispute with upper castes; described as Maharashtra's worst Dalit atrocity case, it provoked violent protests across the state.

NEW DELHI/Bangalore: Even as the Opposition dharna in the Karnataka legislature entered the second day on Tuesday, part of the political action shifted to New Delhi where Governor H.R. Bhardwaj met President Pratibha Patil and reportedly discussed the issue of illegal mining in the State with her.

He is likely to meet Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday and submit a report relating to the alleged involvement of the Bellary Ministers in illegal mining.
