NEW DELHI: The Indian government is using counter-terrorism measures to arbitrarily detain large numbers of Muslims, says a new report slamming India's record of protecting minority rights.

No action is being taken against officials who sanction such detentions, even when they are proved illegal, say the authors of the report.

NEW DELHI: Even though it has promised to factor in the sensitivities of political parties on caste-based census, the Manmohan Singh government may not be in any hurry to take a call on the demand.
After an initial burst of enthusiasm, displayed both because of pressure from parties across the aisle and its own votaries of social justice, the government leadership is veering round to the view that a final decision on demands for incorporating caste in the ongoing census exercise need not be taken in haste.

Aligarh: The Residential Coaching Academy of Aligarh Muslim University, set up this year to coach minority candidates for competitive government job exams, will hold a national test for selection of candidates on July 15 at four centers - Aligarh, Lucknow, Srinagar and Kozhikode.

The four centres are: Aligarh (S.T.S. High School, AMU, Aligarh), Lucknow (Centennial Intermediate College, Golaganj, Lucknow), Srinagar (The University of Kashmir Hazratbal, Srinagar) and Kozihkode (Farook College, Kozhikode).

New Delhi: A special investigation team of the Gujarat Police probing the alleged encounter of Mumbai college student Ishrat Jahan has found that the 2004 shooting was staged, a top police officer said on Sunday.

The three-member team comprising senior Gujarat police officers is to submit its findings to the Gujarat High Court next month.

Nineteen-year-old Jahan was gunned down, along with Javed Ghulam Sheikh alias Pranesh Kumar Pillai, Amjad Ali alias Rajkumar Akbar Ali Rana and Jisan Johar Abdul Gani, for allegedly plotting to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

New Delhi: The Cabinet has today approved the recommendations of the GoM on Bhopal Gas Leak Disaster and their implementation in a time bound manner.

The GoM was reconstituted by the Government on 26th May 2010 to examine all the issues relating to Bhopal Gas Leak including remediation measures and make appropriate recommendations regarding relief and rehabilitation of the victims and their families.
